In the Thick of It

If you ski, you know that there are myriad words to describe snow conditions. Hero snow. Corn snow, powder, corduroy, granular, fast and firm, mashed potatoes, icy, slushy, soft. You get the idea.

We need similarly expressive descriptors for the quality of the mud now making its presence felt on the dirt roads that crisscross our lovely Valley. Viscous comes to mind. Epic. Daunting. Dangerous. Adventurous. Comical. Other-worldly. All these adjectives apply at some point in the season, and sometimes, all on the same day.

Whichever way you choose to describe mud season, drive with care on the roads out there. And remember, what works well in life also works well when driving in mud–wherever possible, stick to the high ground.
