The Valley of the Donuts

The Valley has a new threat.

Well, a threat to our waistlines, anyway.

We now have three places to buy fresh, locally-made donuts! Each chef has their own style (and their own availability, so check web sites for timing.  The original purveyor is the “Very Small Donut Company,” sold through the Big Picture Theater & Cafe . These cake-like, hearty donuts are delicious and can fuel a full morning of hikes and bikes.  Pro tip… check to see if the Big Picture Cafe has made bread pudding made from the donuts… so good!

Mad River Donuts came on the donut scene earlier this year. Baker Kyle sells his yeasty treats out of the Mad River Exchange (the old Alpino Vino building). My favorites include the glazed donuts with an amazing raspberry sugar topping, and Boston creams filled with creamy goodness.

And, finally, newest to the scene is Twisted Halo. While I’ve heard of people enjoying (really enjoying) these sour-cream based donuts, I haven’t tried one myself yet. Twisted Halo is still working on their web presence, but check them out in the old “Sweet Spot” location, right near the Artisan Gallery, and behind Scrag and Roe.
