Scrag & Roe is a Must Go

Scrag & Roe restaurant, recently opened on Bridge Street in Waitsfield, is a much-needed addition to the Mad River Valley food scene.

Opened by Caleb Pierce and Nathan Davis, restaurant industry veterans with over 40 years of combined experience, Scrag & Roe features international cuisine with a focus on fresh seafood and shared dishes.

My husband and I started with the radicchio salad and lamb skewers. Both were categorized as “snacks,” but the portions were ample and generous enough to share. The salad incorporated fennel, mint, and cara cara oranges with a light dressing that enhanced the citrus and made all the flavors pop. The flavorful lamb skewers were seasoned with sumac and came in a group of three nestled in a puddle of labneh and mint oil.

Our main course was the whole red snapper for two. The fish was a work of art, stuffed with greens and dressed with sesame and other delicious seasonings. The fish was large, but we ate every bite. To conclude the meal, we shared the cookie plate of homemade Oreos, sesame cookies, and a dense, hedonistic chocolate square that was a cross between a mousse and fudge.

The menu and wine and cocktail list are small but inventive. There is something here for everyone, served in a charming, farmhouse-style dining room with flowers on every table and a happy buzz from the bar in the adjacent room. My husband and I will be back soon.

Scrag & Roe is open Thursday – Monday, 4:00-9:00 p.m. The restaurant is now taking reservations. The place was packed at 6:30 on a Thursday night, so it’s probably a good idea to book in advance.
